Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

What is SLT?

SLT is a laser procedure used to prevent or treat open angle glaucoma.

Glaucoma is an eye condition that damages the optic nerve.

SLT helps lower pressure in your eye by improving fluid drainage.

The laser targets specific cells in the eye's drainage system.
What to Expect

Before the procedure:
-
There are no special preparations for your SLT treatment, simply arrive at the office at your scheduled appointment time.

Anesthetic drops will be instilled in your eye(s) immediately before the procedure to numb the eye(s).

During the procedure:
-
You will be seated comfortably.
-
A lens will be placed on your eye to reduce movements like blinking.

The surgeon will then perform the procedure. The SLT treatment is painless and is quickly completed. Some patients report mild discomfort during treatment.

After the procedure:

You may resume your normal daily activities after receiving SLT treatment.

The eye may feel irritated, have redness, and suffer from blurry vision for the first few hours after the SLT treatment - use artificial tears.

Temporary increase in eye pressure.

Important Notes

The procedure is typically completed over two separate sessions 4-6 weeks apart.

Please make sure to continue any other glaucoma drops you have been prescribed as per your surgeon’s instructions.

You will be scheduled for a 4-6 week follow-up with your surgeon after two treatment sessions to measure your eye pressure.

Contact your doctor or proceed to your nearest emergency department if you experience:

Severe prolonged eye pain, not relieved by Tylenol.

Sudden vision changes, very blurry vision.
