Understanding Your OCT
Angiography (OCT-A) Scan
During your eye exam, we've recommended an OCT Angiography (OCT-A) scan. This is an advanced, non-invasive imaging technique that allows us to visualize the tiny blood vessels in the retina and choroid (layers at the back of your eye) without the need for injecting dye, unlike traditional angiography. This helps us assess the health and flow of blood in these vital structures.
Why is this OCT-A Scan Important for You?
An OCT-A scan can provide valuable information about the health of the blood vessels in your retina and choroid. This detailed visualization can help us:
-
Establish a detailed baseline of your vascular health: This allows us to monitor for any future changes in blood vessel structure or flow more effectively.
-
Identify subtle vascular abnormalities: The OCT-A can detect early signs of certain conditions affecting the blood vessels that may not be apparent during a standard eye exam.
-
Provide a more comprehensive understanding of your overall eye health: Assessing the vascular health of your retina and choroid is an important component of a thorough eye evaluation.
Why do we need to perform the OCT-A scan at MEC, even if you've had other OCT scans elsewhere?
While you may have had retinal imaging done at another clinic, OCT Angiography is a relatively new technology, and the specific capabilities and software used can vary significantly between different devices and manufacturers. Our office utilizes a specific OCT-A system that provides detailed and high-resolution images of your retinal and choroidal vasculature.
To accurately monitor any changes in your blood vessel health over time and ensure we have a consistent baseline for your ongoing care, it's important that we perform the OCT-A scan using our specific technology and established protocols. This allows your specialist to make the most precise comparisons during follow-up appointments and effectively detect even subtle changes in blood flow that might indicate early signs of certain eye conditions.
The OCT-A scan is quick, comfortable, and provides valuable information about the health of your retinal and choroidal blood vessels without the need for injections.
The fee for this test is $85.
