Understanding Your
OCT of the Macula

During your eye exam, we've recommended an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan focused on the macula, the central part of your retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision and colour perception. This scan provides a high-resolution, cross-sectional image of the different layers of your macula, allowing us to assess its overall health and identify any subtle changes or abnormalities.

Why is this Macular OCT Important for You?

An OCT of the macula can provide valuable information about the health of this critical area of your retina. It can help us:

  • Establish a detailed baseline: This allows us to monitor for any future changes in your macular health more effectively.

  • Identify subtle structural changes: The OCT can detect early signs of certain conditions that may not be visible during a standard eye exam.

  • Provide a more comprehensive understanding of your overall eye health: This information can be important for future comparisons and management.

Why do we need to perform the OCT at MEC, even if you've had a similar test elsewhere?

While you may have had other types of retinal imaging done, a macular OCT specifically focuses on the central part of your retina responsible for detailed vision. The level of detail and the specific features analyzed can vary between different OCT devices and manufacturers. Our office utilizes a specific OCT system that provides high-resolution images and detailed analysis of your macular structure.

To accurately monitor any changes in your macular health over time and ensure you have a consistent baseline for your ongoing care, it's important that we perform the OCT scan using our specific technology and established protocols. This allows your specialist to make the most precise comparisons during follow-up appointments and effectively detect even subtle changes in the macular structure that might indicate early signs or progression of various eye conditions.

Coverage:

While OHIP covers OCT scans of the macula for specific diagnosed conditions that meet their criteria, based on your current examination findings/referral letter, your situation does not yet meet those specific OHIP coverage requirements. Therefore, the cost of today's macular OCT scan would be an uninsured service.

The fee for this scan is $85.
